How Long Should a PC or Laptop Last?

I work on 12-year-old desktops that are fine. I also work on 3-year-old laptops that are completely dead. Age by itself tells you very little. What actually determines how long a machine lasts is how it was built, what's been done to it, and whether the problems it develops are the fixable kind or the expensive kind.

The question people usually ask when something goes wrong is "is it worth repairing or should I just replace it?" This post is about understanding where your machine sits before you need to answer that — and about the things that look like terminal decline but often aren't.

Rough lifespans

These are honest estimates, not guarantees.

What actually wears out

Thermal paste dries out. It's the material between the processor and the heatsink that transfers heat. After 4-5 years it loses its effectiveness and the processor starts running hotter than it should. A clean and repaste — removing all the old paste, applying fresh — costs around £40-60 at a repair shop and regularly gives a machine another 3-4 years of reliable use. This is one of the most cost-effective repairs there is.

Cooling fans develop bearing wear. They get clogged with dust. A replacement fan is usually £20-40 in parts, plus labour. Not a death sentence for the machine.

Spinning hard drives have moving parts and they fail. The fix is straightforward: swap to an SSD. A 500GB SSD costs around £40-50 and a clean Windows reinstall on it will make the machine feel significantly faster than it did when new.

Laptop batteries degrade with charge cycles. Most laptop batteries cost £40-80 to replace and take 30-60 minutes to fit. Replace the battery, not the laptop.

What doesn't wear out

The processor, RAM, and SSD storage don't degrade in any meaningful way for most users. A 2015 processor in 2026 is slower than a 2022 processor — it hasn't broken, it's just older. If a machine "feels slow," it's rarely because those components have worn down. It's almost always software: startup programs, a bloated Windows installation, a full hard drive, or a spinning HDD that should have been replaced with an SSD years ago.

What does change is what the software asks of the hardware. Windows 11 uses more RAM sitting idle than Windows 10 did. Chrome in 2026 is noticeably hungrier than Chrome in 2023. Video calls went from a novelty to a daily thing, and Teams and Zoom both eat more resources than they used to. The hardware hasn't slowed down — the bar it has to clear has moved upwards. A machine that was comfortably spec'd five years ago can genuinely feel underpowered now, not because anything broke, but because the software it runs has grown.

Signs it's genuinely time to replace

Multiple hardware failures in quick succession — second fan, second hard drive, then something on the motherboard — suggest the machine is past its reliable life and you're on a treadmill of repairs.

Windows 11 not being supported is a factor when combined with age. Intel 7th generation processors (Core i5-7xxx, i7-7xxx) and older are hard blocked from Windows 11. AMD Ryzen 1000 series similarly. If that machine is already 8 years old and developing problems, you're supporting an unsupported OS on ageing hardware. That's a reasonable point to consider replacement.

The 50% rule: if fixing what's wrong costs more than half what a reasonable replacement would cost, replacing makes more financial sense. It's a rough guide rather than a hard rule — sentimental value, specific software that won't run on new hardware, and the sheer hassle of setting up a new machine all factor in. But as a starting point, it's sensible.

Signs that look like aging but aren't

"It's slow." Nine times out of ten, this is software, not hardware. A machine that started life quick and has become sluggish over 5 years is almost always fixable — startup programs have accumulated, Windows has accumulated years of background services and temporary files, or (very commonly) the hard drive was always a spinning disk and it's now full. A proper clean-up, or an SSD swap with a fresh Windows install, fixes this regularly. I do this job multiple times a week and the turnaround is usually dramatic.

Overheating. Dried thermal paste and dust-clogged heatsinks make machines thermal throttle and shut down from heat. This is not the machine giving up — it's a maintenance issue. Clean and repaste, and it runs normally again.

Short battery life. Replace the battery. The laptop is fine.
