Expert Laptop Repairs —
All Makes and Models

Laptops are trickier than desktops. Everything is more compact, parts are often soldered in, and screens are delicate. You need someone who knows what they're doing — and I've been repairing laptops since 2008.

I work on all brands — Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, Toshiba, Samsung, and more. Whether it's a cracked screen that needs replacing, a battery that won't hold charge, a keyboard with missing keys, or a laptop that overheats and shuts itself down, I can sort it.

Because I work from home in Laffak, St Helens, I don't have shop overheads — which means my prices are significantly lower than the high street. You get the same professional repair, just without the markup.

I work evenings and weekends, so you can drop your laptop off at a time that suits you — no need to take a day off work or fight for a Saturday appointment.

Common Issues

Laptop Problems I Fix

🖥️

Cracked or Broken Screen

Dropped your laptop or sat on it? I source and fit replacement screens for most makes and models, usually within a few days.

🔋

Won't Charge / Battery Issues

Battery swelling, not holding charge, or laptop only works plugged in? I can replace batteries and diagnose charging faults.

🌡️

Overheating / Fan Noise

Laptop sounds like a jet engine or keeps shutting down? Usually dust buildup or dried thermal paste. I'll strip it down and sort it.

⌨️

Keyboard Problems

Keys not working, stuck, or missing entirely? I can replace individual keys or the whole keyboard unit depending on the model.

🐌

Slow Performance

An SSD upgrade can make an old laptop feel brand new. I also clean up bloatware and optimise Windows for better performance.

💧

Liquid Damage

Spilled tea, coffee or water on your laptop? Act fast — turn it off, don't plug it in, and get it to me as soon as possible.

In Depth

Why Laptops Are
Harder to Repair

Desktops are forgiving. There's space inside, the parts are standard, and if something doesn't fit you can usually swap it for something that does. Laptops are the opposite. Manufacturers cram everything into a 20mm-thick chassis, and they've each got their own way of doing it. A hinge bracket from one Lenovo model won't fit the model that came out six months later. A Dell battery from 2021 won't drop into a 2023 chassis even if the laptop looks identical from the outside. That's the bit most people don't realise — "laptop parts" aren't really a category. Every job starts with identifying the exact model, year, and sometimes the specific revision before I can even quote.

Screen replacement is the clearest example. A 15.6-inch panel sounds like it should be standard, but there are dozens of variations — different connectors, different backlight types, matte versus glossy, touch versus non-touch, different resolutions, different mounting brackets. Fitting the wrong panel either won't work at all or it'll work badly — wrong colours, flickering, dead pixels around the edges. I source the right panel for your specific machine, which sometimes takes a couple of days, but it's the difference between a proper repair and a bodge job.

Then there's the thermal side. Laptop cooling is a tight little system — a copper heatpipe, a small fan, and thermal paste that dries out after three or four years. Once it dries out, the CPU starts thermal-throttling, the fan spins flat-out trying to compensate, and eventually the laptop shuts itself down to protect itself. Stripping a laptop, cleaning the heatsink, and re-pasting it properly takes a couple of hours but transforms how it runs.

Liquid damage is the one I want to be blunt about. If you've spilled something on your laptop, turn it off immediately by holding the power button. Do not try to turn it back on to "see if it still works" — that's the single worst thing you can do, because powering it up while there's liquid inside is what actually kills the motherboard. Don't plug the charger in either. Get it to me as quickly as you can so I can open it up, clean the boards before corrosion sets in, and give it a proper chance.

Drop-Off or Callout

Whichever Suits You

Laptops are the easiest thing in the world to do a callout for. There's no monitor to disconnect, no tower to lift into the boot of a car, no tangle of cables behind a desk to photograph before unplugging. It's just a laptop and its charger. That makes the callout option genuinely practical for laptop work in a way it isn't for desktops.

If it's a software issue — a Windows reinstall, a virus, slow boot times, email setup, a printer that's stopped talking to it — I can usually sort the lot on your kitchen table in an hour or two. You don't lose the laptop, you don't lose your files, and you can watch what I'm doing if you want to.

If it's hardware — a screen, a keyboard, a battery, a re-paste — I'll take it back to the workshop where I've got the proper tools, parts, and antistatic kit, and drop it back to you a day or two later once it's done. Either way, it's a quick WhatsApp to start. I'll come out in the evening or at the weekend, take a look, and tell you straight whether it's worth fixing or not.

I cover the wider St Helens area — Haydock, Newton-le-Willows, Billinge, Rainhill, Eccleston, Prescot, Rainford, Sutton, Thatto Heath, Parr and everywhere in between. If you're a few minutes' drive from Laffak, I can get to you.

FAQ

Common Questions

How much does laptop screen replacement cost in St Helens?

It depends entirely on the model. A standard 15.6-inch HD panel for something like a basic Acer or HP might come in around £90–£120 fitted. A higher-resolution IPS or touch screen for a premium Dell, Lenovo or Asus can be £150–£250 fitted. MacBook screens are a different category again. Once you tell me the exact model — there's usually a label on the underside — I can give you a firm price within a day, including the part and the labour. No diagnostic fee for screen quotes.

I've spilled liquid on my laptop — what should I do right now?

Hold the power button down for ten seconds to force it off. Unplug the charger. Don't try to turn it back on to check if it still works — that's what destroys the motherboard. Tip it upside down on a towel to let liquid drain out and get it to me as quickly as possible, ideally the same day. The faster I can open it up and clean the boards, the better the chances of saving it. If it's been a few days and corrosion has already set in it gets a lot harder, but it's still worth a look.

Is it worth repairing a laptop that's a few years old?

Honestly, often yes. A five-year-old laptop with a slow hard drive and dried thermal paste can feel completely transformed by an SSD upgrade and a clean-out — for a fraction of the cost of a new machine. But there's a point where it isn't worth it, and I'll tell you straight when you've reached it. If the motherboard's gone on a budget laptop that cost £300 new, I won't try to talk you into a £200 repair. I'd rather be honest and lose the job than charge you for work that doesn't make sense.

Will my data be safe during a repair?

Yes. For most repairs I don't need to touch your data at all — the drive comes out as a unit and goes back in as a unit. Even for repairs that do involve the drive, I always take an image first if there's any risk. I work on my own from a home workshop, so your laptop isn't being passed around staff or shipped off to a third party. If you want me to wipe the machine before returning it, or transfer your data to a new drive, just say.

Can you fix laptops that are out of warranty?

That's most of what I do. Once the manufacturer's warranty runs out — usually after a year or two — taking a laptop back to the brand for repair tends to be expensive and slow. I can do the same work, often the next evening, for a lot less. I work on Dell, HP, Lenovo, Asus, Acer, Toshiba, Samsung, MSI, Microsoft Surface and most other brands. If you're not sure whether yours is something I handle, just send me the model number on WhatsApp and I'll let you know.

Need your laptop fixed?
